Natural Gas Pressure Regulator: Components and Applications

Many homes and industries use natural gas. It may heat residences and other structures. It can also operate equipment. Pipelines across the country bring the supply of natural gas and oil to its destination. However, the pipe system cannot allow the gas to flow at the same pressure into the home, business or industrial facility. In order to control the pressure and ensure it is at the right amount, utility companies install a valve – a natural gas pressure regulator. It works automatically to reduce the gas pressure to the appropriate level. This prevents possible accidents as well as potential damages to the devices, equipment, and tools.

Basic Components

Pressure regulators consist of three basic but necessary elements:

  1. Restricting element: This often consists of a valve seat (plug) and a sharp-edged cavity. It reduces the pressure as it flows through the regulator
  2. Measuring element: This device, characteristically an elastomeric diaphragm, measures any changes in downstream pressure. It then signals these changes to the restricting element that then opens or closes accordingly.
  3. Loading element: This force is in continuous comparison with the downstream pressure. Depending upon the results, the signal is sent to open or close the restricting element.

All three components work as one unit to reduce high-pressure flow to one that is more amenable for usage. A natural gas pressure regulator ensures the control is precise and accurate.

Applications of a Natural Gas Pressure Regulator

Natural gas pressure regulators are applicable in diverse industries. The most common applications of these type of valves are in

  • Air compressors
  • Cooking
  • Gas-powered vehicles
  • Mining industry
  • Oil and gas industries
  • Water pressure reduction

With its ability to modulate the flow of natural gas into a specific system, and the potential for so much to go astray, it is easy to see why the right selection and proper installation of a natural gas pressure regulator are imperative.
