There are too many cases of animal abuse in the world, and to many time neighbors feel that it is not their business. Many people don’t realize that statistics show people who abuse animals, or ten times more likely to eventually turn to abusing people as well. Reporting animal abuse helps to promote a less violent society and helps a defenseless animal at the same time. If you suspect someone is abusing an animal, it is best to call the Anne Arundel County Animal Control officers right away to have the problem checked out.

Whenever you see an animal that you suspect is being abused, run through this mental checklist. Make sure that the animal has:

  • Plenty of food and water
  • Adequate shelter from the harsh sun and rain
  • No untreated injuries
  • Looks healthy

If you see that one or more of these needs is not being met, then it is time to investigate further.

If you see someone beating or abusing an animal, step in and stop them, if you feel it is safe to do so. Oftentimes, it is best to take your cell and call in the Anne Arundel County Animal Control officers instead. If you feel that the person abusing the animal is dangerous to you or your family, then you need to refrain and let the professionals do the job instead.

If you feel it is safe to do so, try to talk to the owner of the animal to see what the situation is. You may find out that the dog with the open wounds is already receiving medical treatment and no further action is needed.

If you suspect animal cruelty, make sure to document dates, times, and the nature of the abuse. Videos and pictures are helpful, but they are not required, and you are not to put yourself or your family in danger at any time.
