Do you enjoy helping others? Are you interested in the field of medicine, but not sure about becoming a surgical doctor or nurse? Does the idea of working with a team of other professionals in a relatively low-stress environment appeal to you? Then becoming a radiologist may be the career choice for you!

What Does a Radiologist Do?

A radiologist is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating injuries and medical conditions using medical imaging techniques. This may include x-rays, MRIs and more. Typically, radiology technicians will conduct the tests while doctors of radiology will review the results, diagnose conditions and issue orders for patients.

What Kind of Training is Required for Radiology?

Becoming a radiologist required medical schooling and licensure, as well as a residency of four years with an experienced radiology provider. Most radiologists will also choose to become certified by the American Board of Radiology or the American Osteopathic Board of Radiology. These certifications are not mandatory, but do add to the overall qualification and experience of a provider of radiology.

The income and outlook of the radiologist is very good. The average income of a doctor of radiology is approximately a quarter of a million dollars, annually. The projected growth for this field is around fourteen percent, higher than the national average for most fields. Getting a degree in radiology certainly has its benefits!

Where Do Radiologists Work?

Radiologists are typically employed in hospitals or imaging centers, where the tests they perform are conducted. Some radiologists may also work in emergency clinics or walk-in centers that provide urgent care to patients, and others may work strictly on an on-call basis. Regardless, the same amount of training is required for all radiology positions.

If you’re considering a career in radiology, consult an advisor at your local community college or vocational school. You could be on your way to a brighter, happier future in no time at all!
